A

ACTUATOR

Part of an ultrasonic press performing a mechanical work, exploiting the compressed air energy.

AMPLITUDE

Variable measure of the mechanical oscillation magnitude (vibration).
Amplitude is expressed in micrometers(┬Ám).

ANVIL

Tool which is counterposed to the sonotrode. It can have different designs, according to the application.

AUTOMATIC LINE

Automatic productive line set by PLC.

C

CONVERTER

Synonym: Transducer.
Tool composed of piezoelectric ceramics, which receives the electrical energy from the generator.
Thanks to the ceramics, the electrical energy  is converted into mechanical energy (vibrations).

B

BOOSTER

Part of an ultrasonic machine. It is used to increase the amplitude of the vibration which, eventually, will reach the sonotrode.

G

GENERATOR

High-Voltage and sine wave generator. The converter will transform this electrical/acoustical signal into mechanical movement.

F

FREQUENCY

Measure indicating how many vibrations per second the sonotrode can perform.

I

INSERTION

Technique which allows working on two different materials, like for example the insertion of metal screws inside a plastic product: thanks to the ultrasonic vibration, the plastic part is softer and flows through the interstices o the bush.
Ultrasonic metallic inserts grant a great anchoring in the plastic part, even under twisting and traction.

 

INTERFACE

Communication board among one or more systems.

HARDENING

Special treatment for sonotrodes which are going to be used for materials difficult to process.

M

MANUAL HANDGRIP

Tools of different shapes per manual ultrasonic cutting and welding.

P

PLC

Device for setting and checking the machines and the automatic implants.

POWER

It is expressed in Watt; in the physics field, it is described as the amount of energy transferred in a unit of time.

PUNCHING

Method of separation, which consists in cutting the plane surface of a plastic part using a cutting tool, though pressure or percussion

For ultrasonic punching applications, electric contacts are used to turn off the machine.

S

SONOTRODE

It is the ultrasonic tool in direct contact with the plastic part.
According to the characteristics of the sonotrode designed according to the applications, it is possible to cut or weld different kinds of products. 

R

RIVETING

Joining two materials using a rivet.
In the ultrasonic riveting processes, the mechanical vibrations are transferred from the sonotrode to the rivet.
The sontrode is the riveting tool.

U

ULTRASONIC PRESS

Ultrasonic machine composed of a generator, a pneumatic actuator with a protective shell and a plate.
It is possible to use it both in semi-automatic and automatic implants.

It allows welding the two plastic parts thanks to the pressure generated by the pneumatic actuator.

ULTRASOUNDS

Mechanical sound waves. Ultrasonic frequencies, differently from the common acoustic phenomenon, are not detectable by the human ear

T

TRIGGER

Trigger: Start trigger.  
Ultrasonic initiating system selectable according to the application.

- In the anticipated mode, ultrasounds are activated at the exact time when the pneumatic system starts its run. 
In this way, the sonotrode will start vibrating before getting in contact with the material which has to be welded.

- In the delayed mode, ultrasounds are activated when the sonotrode gets in contact with the material, following a triggering value (in this case strength/pressure).

V

VIBRATING GROUP

The group of elements composed of a converter,  a booster, and  a sonotrode.

VIBRATION

Mechanical oscillation.

In ultrasonic technology, the electrical energy is transferred into mechanical energy thanks to the converter, which again transfers the vibration to the sonotrode.
